Buddhist Councils



  • The first Council sponsored by King Ajatasattu was held three months after Buddha Śākyamuni's Mahaparinirvana in ca. 483 BCE in the Satiapanni Cave in Rajgir (Rajagaha) India. It was presided over by the senior monk Mahākassyapa. Here the Buddhas teachings were organized into the three Pitakas : The Sutta Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Abhidamma Pitaka.

  • The second Council sponsored by King Kalasoka was held in ca. 383 BC in Vaishali India.

  • The third Council in ca. 253 BC was sponsored by Emperor Asoka and held at Asokarama in Pataliputra (Patna) India. It was presided over by the Elder Moggaliputta Tissa.

  • The "fourth" Council (of the Theravādin School) was held in Tambapanni, Sri Lanka in 29 BCE. under the patronage of King Vattagamani.

  • The "fourth" Council (of the then developing Mahāyana School) was sponsored by King Kanishka of Kushān and was held in in Jālandahara in ca. 1-2 century AD. The monk Vasumitra presided over the event. This Council is not recognized by the Theravādins.

  • The fifth Council was held in Mandalay, Burma from 1868-1871, where a tooth of the Buddha was brought by the Chinese delegation.

  • The sixth Council was held in Rangoon, Burma in Rangoon, Burma in 1954-1956.



    World Buddhist Congresses


    Additionally in more modern times:

    • The First World Buddhist Congress was held in Kandy, Sri Lanka in May of 1950 and was presided over by the Pāli Professor Malalasekera.

    • The Second World Buddhist Congress was held in Japan in 1952.

    • The Third World Buddhist Congress was held parallel to the Sixth Council in Rangoon, Burma in the Autumn of 1954.

    • The Fourth World Buddhist Congress was held in Kathmandu, Nepal in 1956.

    • The Fifth World Buddhist Congress was held in Bankok, Thailand in 1958.

    • The Sixth World Buddhist Congress was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 1961





    World Buddhist Sangha Council


    • The First World Buddhist Sangha Council was held in Columbo, Sri Lanka in May, 1966.

    • The Second World Buddhist Sangha Council was held in Saigon, Vietnam in June 1969.

    • The Third World Buddhist Sangha Council was held in Taiwan in December 1981.

    • The Fourth World Buddhist Sangha Council was held in Bangkok, Thailand in January 1986.

    • The Fifth World Buddhist Sangha Council was held in Taiwan in Oct-Nov. 1989.

    • The Sixth World Buddhist Sangha Council was held in Penang Malaysia in Nov. 1995.
